Asphalt Paving, Done Properly

A Local Christchurch Concrete & Asphalt Team Since 1998

Asphalt is in our name. Alongside our concrete work, iPave lays asphalt driveways for homes across Christchurch City and the wider district, including Halswell, Rolleston, Lincoln, Rangiora and Kaiapoi.

Whether it's a new driveway for a new build, a long rural drive, or replacing old asphalt that has cracked and broken up, the result is only as good as what sits underneath. That is why we look at the ground first and get the base right before the surface goes down.

Why Choose an Asphalt Driveway?

A Practical, Hard-Working Surface

Asphalt is a popular driveway surface for good reason.

Flexible: Asphalt has some give in it, so it copes with small ground movement rather than relying on joints the way concrete does.

Quicker to Use: An asphalt surface can generally be driven on sooner after laying than a fresh concrete slab, which has to cure.

Clean, Dark Finish: The dark colour gives a smooth, tidy, uniform look.

Suits Larger Areas: From suburban sections to long rural driveways, asphalt paving is a sensible option for covering a lot of ground.

Resurfacing & Replacing Old Asphalt

Fixing the Cause, Not Just the Surface

Replacing an old driveway takes more than a fresh layer on top. We handle the full removal of old asphalt or damaged concrete, re-engineer the base, and make sure the new surface is better than the original. If you'd rather switch to concrete when you replace it, we can do that too.

Asphalt or Concrete?

Because we lay both, we can give you a straight answer for your property rather than pushing one product. In general terms:

Asphalt is flexible, quicker to use after laying and has a dark, uniform colour. Like any asphalt surface, it needs resealing from time to time to keep it in good condition.

Concrete generally lasts longer and gives you far more choice in how it looks, from a plain broom finish on our concrete driveways to decorative exposed aggregate.

Whichever surface you choose, a new driveway usually needs clean edges and somewhere for the water to go. We can add kerbing and drainage in the same job, with one team and one quote.

Asphalt Driveway Questions

Which is cheaper to install, concrete or asphalt?

It depends on the size of the driveway, access, the ground conditions and how much base work is needed. As a general rule, asphalt often costs less up front, while concrete tends to last longer and needs less ongoing upkeep. The best way to compare is to get both priced for your property, and because we do both, we can quote them side by side.

Is 2 inches of asphalt enough for a driveway?

The right thickness depends on the ground underneath, the base and the vehicles that will use the drive, so there is no one answer that suits every property. A well-prepared base matters just as much as the asphalt on top. We assess your site and recommend what suits it as part of your quote.

What are the different types of driveways in New Zealand?

Common choices include asphalt, plain concrete, exposed aggregate, stamped or patterned concrete and coloured concrete, along with gravel and pavers. We lay asphalt as well as plain, exposed aggregate, stamped and coloured concrete, so we can talk you through the options that suit your home and budget.

Can you replace my old asphalt driveway?

Yes. We remove the old asphalt, re-engineer the base where needed, and lay the new surface in either asphalt or concrete.
